Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah, is an American musician, actress, and rapper. Queen Latifah's performance in music film and television has earned her a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, and Rita, a educator of Irvington High School. Her parents divorced in the year Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic high school located within Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic word that means "delicate and gentle". Her aunt bestowed it on her in the age of eight. Latifah's height of 5'10" allowed her to be a formidable performer at high school. In a school production, she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her journey into beatboxing. Latifah was member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and signed Latifah in 1988 for the release of her first track Wrath of My Madness.
